I hate flies and mosquitoes. What do they do? Some people say that they hate bees, but bees actually do good stuff. They pollinate flowers and make honey and what-not. But what to mosquitoes and flies do other than spread disease?

  1. Flies:

    1. The maggots of some flies are used in curing the wounds, as those maggots feed upon the decaying tissues inside the human body, leaving fresh and healthy tissues behind. (technical use)

    2. Calliphora, (blow fly) helps in the Forensic study, as by noticing their life stages, the extent of their development, Forensic experts conclude their results..

    3. effective decomposition of the matter.

    Mosquitoes:

    1. act as a feed for Gambusia (and some other fish)

    2. Nymphs of the Dragon Fly, May Fly feed upon the mosquito larvae.

Hence, mosquito larvae act as a base for the feeding purposes of the developmental stages of many insects, which further act as a functional priority in the Ecosystem.

    Hence, Directly or Indirectly,

both, mosquitoes and flies have their own functional importance in the ecosystem.

    Hope it Helps..

  2. Mosquitoes also pollinate flowers and their larvae r good for my fish. Flies speed up decomposing. And maggots are used of pharm purposes.

  3. Mostly, they provide the lower levels for the food chain. If mosquitoes and flies didn't exist, a whole lot of low-level predators like bats, spiders, etc. would die out real fast. The food chain would collapse a bit.

Besides that... not every species has to have a beneficial effect on the local ecosystem. Parasites are just that - parasites. They take and don't give back, and have evolved to do so very, very effectively.
