  1. Well since Julius was assassinated, his adopted son, Octavian, thought it was his duty to hunt down and kill Julius's murderers. Once the Triumvirate (Octavian, Mark Antony and Lepidus) had avenged Caesar's death there was the socio-political problem back in Rome.

The Romans loved Caesar and since Rome was on the verge of becoming an empire at Caesar's death (due to the instability of a Republic as demonstrated by the previous civil wars. Caesar finally bought peace to Rome and so was loved for it), someone had to fill his place to satisfy the Romans need for stability - stability only possible under a single definitive ruler.

Lepidus was cast aside by Antony and Octavian as not possessing any real power. Eventually Antony and Octavian fought for the position of Emperor in a series of battles. Octavian was the victor and declared himself the Emperor of Rome.

He took the name Augustus and fulfilled both the social need for stability and the political need for a ruler and new style of government, as the old style of government, the Republic, which allowed a significant number of men with considerable power to run the state, bred power hungry politicians and immanent civil wars.
