What software can I use to design my poster for my dissertation presentation?

If you're making a poster, you want to work with vector images.  This will allow the poster to look crystal clear at large sizes.  If you have Adobe Illustrator on hand, use that.  If not, use Inkscape (it's free) http://www.inkscape.org/

After you're done designing it, export to PDF and take to Office Max or some other printing store.  A professionally printed poster makes a good impression and is fairly cheap.
