What software can be used to make anime characters and graphics? Where can I get it?

I want to draw and colour anime characters on the computer... what software program do I need for this, and where can I get it? Thanks.

If you draw and ink the art on paper and then scan it you don't really need a tablet but it always helps to use one. I personally like Adobe Photoshop because ive used it since the beginning. Others use Corel Painter, which is supposed to emulate real life painting. There's also another one called Manga Studio, which has useful manga tools like tones and characteristic manga effects.

You can get all of them at Amazon.com, I just checked and they have a lite version of Manga Studio for 39 dollars. The other ones are more expensive, probably between 200 and 500 depending on which version you purchase.

Well, it's for drawing in generally really. If you would like to make your own characters from scratch I would recommend getting a digital tablet. The best ones can be found at http://www.wacom.com/index2.cfm  these tablets come with a paint program or two free. Also they have programs specifically for anime drawings. OpenCanvas is one of them http://www.portalgraphics.net/en/  and SAI is another http://www.systemax.jp/en/sai/  SAI is a newer program and is really great and has many tools and is one of the cheapest, yet produces a better quality.
