What software can i download for free which i can use to write letters, add pictures then print?

There is a free Java Office Suite that uses the same file formats as MS Office. Openoffice.org  It is free.

OpenOffice 2.4 is indeed probably the best alternative, and there are versions to suit most operating systems.  It's totally free and compatible with MS Office. The menus are similar and you can also open, edit and print any MS Office documents with it.
