  1. just read about securing wireless networks, start by removing the option of broadcasting your "wireless name"

that will be the first step.

  2. The software running on the router is called "firmware". There are lots of 3rd party firmware available to use only if your router is capable of running the firmware.

    DD-WRT http://www.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv3/index.php

    Open-wrt http://openwrt.org/

Those are just a couple of good ones to use. The only thing is, you need the right router. Not just any router will work.

Here is a list of supported hardware for DD-WRT: http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Sup...

The routers with the most memory and fastest CPU are most likely better for the firmware upgrade, but DD-WRT does have a solution for other models with less RAM, but this method can be tricky and it might "brick" the router.

Here is the wiki for DD-WRT : http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Mai...

That should get you going on the basics. Look over the wiki on how to install the firmware.

As for the router, i find that the Linksys wrt-54gs up to version 3 to be the best.

  3. Depending on your router, you should be able to enable some sort of MAC filtering that will allow only the computers that you have specified in your key list of MACs to connect to your network.
