  1. culture

the way people live and act

    how they treat each other

  2. Some of the key factors that led to the development of sociology:

A lack of compassion towards man.

A lack of understanding of human behavior from psychology alone (we grew to understand that the social is as important as the psychological, if not more so).

The application of subfields of sociology aided in its growth (criminology, environmental sociology, et cetera) through specialization.

Key studies that proved macrosocial forces influenced our world (look at Suicide by Durkheim).

It is important to note that sociology was in development as far back as man.  We have always been socially curious animals.  The great philosophers of the world ultimately created the desire to really examine our social world, but we have always been curious.

"Sociology later emerged as a scientific discipline in the early 19th century as an academic response to the challenges of modernity and modernization, such as industrialization and urbanization. Sociologists hope not only to understand what holds social groups together, but also to develop responses to social disintegration and exploitation." (Wikipedia)

Those are just a few that come to mind right off the top of my head.
