  1. i remember in the 80s when 2 live crew caused alot of commotion with their music and it starrted the whole censorship thing..

  2. It has GOT to be "Cop Killer" by Body Count.   That song was a lightning rod for controversy in a presidential election year.

  3. The video for "London Calling" caused a bit of a stir with the whole terrorism thing. They thought that there was subliminal messaging like, we're gonna blow up London and stuff..

  4. Well, i don't know about most, but in th 70s and 80s Queen did a lot of stuff. i mean, they had naked girls on bicycles and dressed up in drag. And thats just a little bit.

    =] Queen rock...

  5. the s*x pistols 'never mind the bollocks' was  a massive thing back in the day. it was a number one album but loads of shops refused to sell it and i alot of radio stations ignored the fact it was number one and made there own chart up .

it might not be the most controversial, but it was a big thing in the 70's

  6. music video - I can't recall any video more controversial than Madonna's Like a Prayer...man that thing was all over the news with the black Jesus references and all that jazz...then Pepsi pulled out of her tour and the c**p hit the fan...

as for album cover - I can only think of the Black Crowes...Amorica...

they had to release a friendlier version after this caught too much h**l for being too sexual.

Songs - too many to think about at the moment...

  7. I seem to recal both the song and video for 'Relax' by Frankie Goes to Hollywood caused a lot of censorship in the early 1980's...

    Mercury's Girl :

Wasn't there something about the picture of the girls in the naked bicycle race having to have knickers painted on? And I think the video for 'I Want to Break Free' {the one with the guys in drag} only caused 'issues' in the US.

  8. Smack My Bltch Up - Prodigy

PS - You have to watch it to the end!

  9. I'll go with Elvis Presley shaking his hips on the Ed Sullivan show. Got a lot of people all excited. Guess sexuality wasn't allowed back in the '50s... at least on national TV :-D

  10. Slayer caused a lot of controversy with  "Angel of Death" even though critics were too dumb to know they were satirizing n**i's, not sympathizing them

  11. I remember Nirvana's album with the baby boy on the front.

I remember Madonna's video with the crosses burning.

  12. For album cover I would say The Beatles "butcher cover" or John & Yoko's "Two Virgins" nude cover.

For song, it's kind of a tough call - in the early '60's, Lou Christie's "Rhapsody In The Rain" caused a big fuss, in the late '70's the s*x Pistols "God Save The Queen" got banned in the U.K., then later on there was "Cop Killer" and Guns 'n Roses cover of a Charles Manson song on The Spaghetti Incident.

Madonna probably holds the title for videos.

  13. Number Nine ("Paul is dead") by the Beatles

pretty much any album that has any kind of back-masking done on it causes controversy.

  14. I remember Prodigy's video for 'Smack My ***** Up' caused a lot of static.

  15. The cover of one of Mayhem's compilations, I forgot which one, was elected as the Most Controversial Album Cover of All Time. It's the one with the picture of the singer Per Yngve Ohlin "Dead" when he shot himself. The picture was taken by the guitarist, Euronymous.

EDIT: No, I found it, it's Dawn of the Black Hearts. You can see Dead's brain on the floor, and blood everywhere... Not something to show to little kids.

  16. Off the top of my head .....video-wise

    Jeremy by Pearl Jam

    Closer by Nine Inch Nails

and that video with Marilyn Manson and Rose McGowan...I can't remember the name of the song.

  17. Smell the Glove

  18. For Album Cover it's definitely gotta be The Scorpions original cover for "Virgin Killer" if Someone tried to realease an album with that cover today they'd be spending the next 5 years in San Quentin.

For Music Videos Madonna's "Like A Prayer" spring immediately to mind. You couldn't come up with a video better suited for making Catholics the World over do massive barrel rolls all day. Dancing in a nightgown in front of a field of burning crosses? Just wow. As far as for the "Jesus" sequences I'm not even going there.

For a song see just about anything by Cannibal Corpse or Mayhem.

  19. wasp-animal f**k like a beast is high up

  20. adding to inges answer Jihad by Slayer caused controversy as well because it was about 9/11 through the eyes of a terrorist

  21. Black Sabbath was the object of many controversy mainly because everyone was used to hippie-stuff about love and peace and flowers. Black Sabbath mentioned satan throughout their songs and they sang about violence and that surprised a lot of people so nobody liked them for a while. Pity.....

Oh and for the person above me, the album was Deathcrush
