What song can I sing for a musical theater audition?

Okay, so I don't know that many musicals (or at least I don't know the songs). I'm trying out for a part in "Fame", a musical that we're doing at our school. They mainly said that we need to try out with songs from musical.

Any suggestions?

I am an alto that can sing in a soprano range, and I am not good with holding long notes. Hope you have something for me!

  1. I didn't get from your question, are you supposed to sing something from Fame?  If so, I would go with the theme song, which is great for alto.

But I think you mean you need another musical theatre song.  usually you want to try to do something that's the same style as the show you're trying out for, so I would go with a song from...

    1) Footloose- another 80's musical, it has the same fast rythms and is upbeat like fame.  I'd try "Let's Hear it for the Boy"

    2) Hairspray- This musical is really fun , too, and once again has upbeat music.  Try "I can Hear the Bells"

    3) Thouroughly Modern Millie.  "Forget About the Boy" is really fun.

    4) the movie Flashdance.  Try "What a Feeling" Irene Cara, the original singer of this did the music for "Fame" too so it's the same style.

Good Luck! Let me know how it goes

  2. Try a Miss Saigon piece.

  3. You should try an upbeat song... You could try Mama Mia!!!!!!!
