  1. Well....let me tell you quite simply....

Jazz dance and modern dance, as well as some ballet. There is a little bit of circus acrobatics too; swing trapeze artists would be great on poles.

Climbing skills are minimal but sometimes, especially if you want to climb a pole, you need good upper body strength.

Those dancers with very strong backs also can do some contortion positions while still holding on to the pole...another skill that is not too much used in pole dancing but used to impress the public.

  2. Lots!

It's a combination of lots of different styles and with a sexual energy that is not as explicit in other dance styles.

Pole-dancing routines can have moves derived from many styles of dance and gymnastics. If you are wondering what sort of training you might need I'd consider ballet, jazz and gymnastics. It is very much a performance so any form of theatrical work would be considered good experience. As would burlesque classes!

No matter what anyone says, this is becoming a dance style in its own right - and quite rightly so! The dancers have tremendous upper-body strength, stamina and flexibility that rivals any dancer whose style is more mainstream.
