Question:

What sort of exercises should I do if I wish to increase my overall strength and endurance?

I have a competition coming up, so does anyone know how I can train to build up (or at least maintain) my current body strength?

Cos I don't know exactly what event I'm going to be in, so I thought it best to just train in overall until I know what I'm going to do.

Anyway, thanks for the help too!

  1. I know this sounds mundane, but running for endurance, push-ups and sit-ups for strength and toning. These are fail-safe methods.

A Marine friend of mine does cross training- adding more than one exercise to his curriculum- to work the whole of his body. It really works. Of course, results will vary with the exercises chosen.

The Wik explains the basic concept very simply:

Cross-training (Also known as conditioning) refers to training in different ways to improve overall performance. It takes advantage of the particular effectiveness of each training method, while at the same time attempting to neglect the shortcomings of that method by combining it with other methods that address its weaknesses.

  2. For stamina-building, there's nothing better than swimming, if you have a facility nearby, and running (not on a treadmill), preferably both. Swimming will provide sufficient exercise for all your muscles and running will build your endurance and stamina. Just keep increasing the distance and speed every day. Mornings are the best time for running, although you probably know that.

  3. Everything in that direction!
