  1. I am twelve and I got a horse last year.  She is a 17 year old Welsh CobX Paint.  She rides really well but you have to spend soo much time bonding with ponies so I would recomend a small horse such as Saddlebreds, but they are very expensive in most places.  Maybe just stick with the want ads in The Penny Saver and hope for the best.

    :)

  2. Anyone older than 5 shouldn't ride a pony. A pony is only the size of a great daine! A 12 year old should ride a horse. But I can't name any breeds. Sorry.

  3. This is what I wrote to another gal that asked the same question sorry did not feel like retyping basically the same thing:

You should probably look for an older 10 year + gelding. A quarter horse is a good breed like the person earlier said very versatile, but not the only choice. It all depends on what discipline you are wanting to get into western, english, hunter/jumper, dressage, saddle seat, pleasure, barrel racing, gymkhana, versatility, etc... Whatever you get it should be calm !!!!, reliable, been around the block, and healthy.

    Some to look into:

    Quarter Horse

    Paint

    Tennessee Walking Horse

    Mixed Breed

    Appendix Quarter Horse

Large Ponies (Welsh Mountain Pony, Pony of America)

-these are just the ones off the top of my head

I would probably stay away from the Thoroughbreds, Arabians, Saddlebreds ... although dont discredit these horses totally, they can be awesome just need to be more careful with them. Any breed can be awesome or horrible ... be careful)

You might try to find a trainer/breeder/seller/trader and tell them your situation and maybe even do a quick demo ride for them so they can more properly match your abilities with the horse. Then they will probably be able to help you find a horse right for you. If you dont know any trainers/breeders/sellers/traders I would call your local vet and ask them who a good person would be to go to ... you dont want to get mixed up with a bad person trying to take you for a "ride".

    Hope this helps! Good Luck!
