What sort of lintels were used in Victorian buildings?

  1. Large blocks of stone. They didn't have RSJs in those days.

    The only time I lay awake most of the night in our 200 yr. old house, was when they took out the kitchen window, widened the opening, propped the wall up on scaffolding and left it like that over night. I was convinced it was going to collapse.

    British often followed a classical style and there was a neo-gothic movement too.

    This link is a decent example but they used this in the georgian period too.  This one's wooden but many (particularly in the richer cities) had carved stone.

  4. On the outsides of buildings, stone.  Inside often timber.  Timber lintels were considerably over-engineered by modern standards.
