Question:

What sort of "special skills" go on a resume?

I was reading some that said "can do splits" or "juggling"

and also some that say singing dancing etc. I know that singing and dancing are on top, but is it good to put all the small things too? If so, what sort of things?

  1. Directors are looking for skills that are applicable to theatre. Some particularly useful skills include fencing, stage combat, musical instruments, and (most importantly) dialects. List a few dialects you have mastered. The useful ones are RP (Proper) English, Cockney, New York (Brooklyn), Irish, Scottish, and sometimes southern.

You may also want to know what skills to leave out. These might include skateboarding, cross country skiing, algebra, and underwater basket weaving. Anything that you can't fathom being useful for a play needs to be omitted.

  2. if you need help... I used this resume writing service in my area, this is the email address, (resume.help50@yahoo.com) you should try them, it only cost me $35.00 and I got a great job from this new resume, I never thought about the format that they use but the turn around time was less then 24 hrs. I would have to say it was the best service I have ever used and it was worth every dime. Also they let me pay through paypal.

  3. You want to put things that could be useful for a part. For example if they are looking for a character who is sporty, having five years of soccer on your special skills can really make you stand out. So, put on the little things you think would be useful for any part.

  4. Dance skills, languages, accents, improv, singing (include your range), if you play any sports, if you do yoga or gymnastics, if you can drive a stick shift (yes, this is sometimes important--I got some work on Pursuit of Happyness) because they needed people who could drive cars from the 80s), if you can use an ear prompter, and any odd things you can do.

I once missed an audition for a national commercial because it required eye-crossing skills, and my agent didn't know I could do that because it wasn't on my resume.  It is now.

Here's an example of a simple resume; note her special skills:
