(edit: just cause someone tries to look like Einstein does not mean they actually are an Einstein!  Go down that route if you want!)

  4. Wow! You're dealing with the exact opposite problem that most people considering starting a business have.  You have the money, but no idea.

I would recommend surveying the public.  Seriously, no joke.  Try some random neighbourhoods near where you live, somewhere with lots of people, or a bunch of very wealthy people, and just ask them what they think is missing from their neighbourhood.  Throw out ridiculous options, hobby store, laundromat, sandwich shop, who knows.

If you find something that alot of people say without you having to coax them, you've found a need.

Now all you gotta do is the rest.

I'm working on a small business series on my blog, part 2 will be posted this weekend, it's regarding turning an idea into a business plan.  Keep an eye out, hopefully it'll help inspire you.

    More than anything, good luck!

  5. With £14k you can start any business you choose, almost.  The question to ask is what business is needed where you can provide it and is it something that you feel passionate enough about to make it successful, coupled with strong marketing to ensure you find the customers you need to make it a success.

Don't rush into throwing all your money into your business.  Done that and, if your business doesn't take off the way you want it to, it can be a long time before you get it back.

What are you good at?  What do you enjoy?  Are there commercial opportunities doing any of these things?  For example, the first business we started was commercial photography.  I'd been a keen photographer for many years, people liked the work I did and said I had a professional approach.  I wanted to get out of the corporate rat race before it caused me permanent damage and I wanted to do something different to what I was doing there, so our photographic business was born.

I'd recommend going on one of your local Business Link's starting in business courses.  They're for people thinking about starting in business or who've just started.  They cover all the things that you need to think about, from putting together a business plan through to the practical stuff like tax and national insurance.  Some people go on the course and realise running their own business isn't for them, others have it confirmed that being their own boss is for them and start a relationship with Business Link that supports them as they set up.

Jonathan Jay, the marketing expert, started his business with just £145 and sold it some years later for several million pounds.  Anything is possible, just plan it carefully and make sure you allow enough time and funds to market it well.

    Good luck!
