  1. An internal newsletter (which used to be called an internal houseorgan) is usually sent to employees.

They are designed to improve morale...inform and educate...increase involvement and unify a "community" of readers.

It's best to decide upon a goal, objectives and strategy before turning out an internal newsletter.

For instance an employee newsletter mnight have as its goal: to have better-informed employees. Its objectives would be to improve employee morale and increase productivity by (say) 15%.

    Strategy:

\Give credit to reliable, hard-working employees.

Every year, list people who haven't taken sick days.

Publish productivity tips submitted by employees.

If an employee attends a seminar outside the company, have the person be a guest columnist and summarize the presentation that she attended.

Give employees information on the company's long term and short term goals.

Remember, the internal newsletter may be seen by people other than employees as well: management, customers, vendors, competitors, so each word and picture must be weighed carefuly to convey the right image.

  2. If you have to think of things to put in it, you don't need a newsletter.

When the new electric telegraph was linked up, the engineer said to Pres. Lincoln "Sir, Denver can now speak to Washington" Pres. Lincoln said "Really? Have they got anything to say?"

Listen to the mobile phone users and you'll see what he meant.
