Each region/city has their own craftsmen and specialites so it depends a bit on where their trip takes them.  Handblown glass from Venice.  Italian gold and leather products from Florence.  Further south, ceramics are made and sold everywhere.  The best souvenirs are memories, which you have to make yourself...

or a gladiator's sword or a rosary blessed by the pope, they sell them on the street in rome.

be grateful for whatever they bring you...unless u're paying for it, then (and only then) you can be picky. Or just try and go yourself and but what u want.
