1. deep fried, grease filled, monster portions, salt on everything,

this is one of the reasons i love America.

  2. The best American food is eclectic. America is a land of immigrants and our food reflects that fact. Originally the strongest influences were European but Asian and Latin American foods are starting to become more mainstream and not just specialty foods. Think of American food as a work in progress.

  3. I say this respectfully, but most American cuisine is actually from various places in Europe. Just with potatos and corn.

American food tends to lack spice, though there are a couple exceptions (generally southern.) The portions are huge, especially since--unlike in most Asian areas, including India--people generally order for themselves rather than eating "family-style." Artificial ingredients are more common in America than other countries, as is mayonnaise. It's also deep-fried and greasy or baked and oily more often than, say, lightly stir-fried.

Americans also have a habit of 'americanizing' foods from other cultures, especially Iralian. Generally, people from said other cultures consider it worse for wear.

I would say that what CHARACTERIZES it is instant gratification. People want quick meals, or quick weight solutions, and that results in a ton of unhealthy "diet" foods and a whole lot of processed or fast food.

I realize I'm basically saying American food is bland and unhealthy, but at least that means the desserts tend to be good.

  4. There is no American food. When we begin to list American foods, either we talk about regional things like lobster or shrimp Creole, or we talk about spaghetti and pizza and hot dogs...One could argue it's what makes it great. The fact that they don't have a cuisine is a measure of their ethnic heterogeneity.

  5. The food is "heavy." A lot of baking, frying, grilling. A lot of salt, sugar, butter (don't even THINK about using margarine...ugh.) It can be spicy, but that depends on taste.

It's one of the reasons out of all of the places I've been in the world, America is will always be home. People from other cultures complain...but they never leave hungry, know what I mean?

  6. Deep-fried.

Lots of cheese, cream, or mayo when not really needed.

    Massive portions.

They are pretty stereotypical characterizations that i've made, but they are also accurate.

  7. Interesting question. What David J says is true. The deep-fried is southern, huge portions are from the days or the Diner foods. Cheese is because we produce a lot of milk in this country. We are a country of fast food & convenience. As for describing the cuisine, we are a melting pot of the world. Pizza is considered American in this country, but you know it's Italian. Oh, we love food, all different kinds.
