1. French cuisine is nothing but a dish that has been prepared to French standards of cooking. The French are famous for cooking because they were the first to standardize recipes not because of a particular type of food.

  2. living in France at the moment, so i would say, we shop fresh, smaller portions, but several courses. Cheese is one of the courses, after the main meal and before the dessert... a lot of fresh fish and seafood, sauteed veggies, main ingredients, olive oil, garlic, wine, parsley, balsamic vinegar, never white ( that's used for cleaning only) bread, bread bread... every meal has to have fresh baked bread.

  3. Most people are going to say butter and garlic but that is the sterotypical fancy French cuisine.

If you are talking about REAL french food then what would make it distinguishing is the freshness. The French shop everyday for their meals. It's not like going to Safeway either. You have to go to each store (butcher, dairy, bakery). The food is also light and often very healthy. The don't cook everything in sauces like you see in resturants. I've had many authentic meals in France that were just roasted veggies and chicken or fish in a light lemon cream. I ate a lot of roasted chicken there, tons of veggies and fish, cold pasta salads with tuna, BBQ's.
