  1. If you want big bass, you are going to need an amp sorry.

6x9 speakers produce the most bass, as they move the most air but when they are powered by just your head unit, even a $600 alpine deck like I've got (which pumps out 18w rms) they aren't heaps bassy.

A simple $300 amp made those 6x9's pump out so much bass I had people asking me how many subs I had.... And this amp was very capable of powering my whole system.

I eventually added a sub later down the track cos my friend's sound systems were catching up with mine lol

  2. the largest size speaker that will fit in your cars speaker holes, and not full-range (2, 3, 4-way speakers)- you want to go with components (separate tweeters and mid/bass drivers) because you don't have one speaker trying to do the job of 2-4 speakers

also the lower the frequency response the deeper the bass, also i recommend getting some bass blockers http://www.crutchfield.com/g_761/Bass-Bl... they stop speaker distortion caused by excessive bass relative to speaker capability (by blocking frequencies too low for the speaker to handle)

pick speakers that have a sensitivity of 90dB or higher (A speaker with a sensitivity rating that's 3 dB higher than another speaker's only needs half as much power to deliver the same amount of sound.) and don't require more than 40watts RMS because if the radio does not have the necessary RMS wattage- when the volume get towards mid to higher levels they will be distorted (from a clipped signal- not enough wattage)

  3. If you don't want to get subs/sub amp, if you can fit them, a 6" x 9" is the way to go.  Some car setups actually get decent bass response from 6" x 9"'s from the rear deck of a car with a good sized trunk.  (You know, the variety where you could fit 3 people in there if you wanted.)  Obviously, the smaller diameter speakers you step down to from a 6" x 9" (e.g. 6 1/2", 5" x 7", 5 1/4", etc, etc...), generally you can expect less bass response as a whole.
