Question:

What speakers should I get?

I'm wanting some inexpensive (but still decent) 70s or 80s floor-standing boomers.

Good old skool stuff to replace the "white van" speaker set I have now.

What brands/models should I look for?

What should I avoid?

"Big" is fine...space is not a problem.

I don't care about 5.1, subwoofers or any of that jazz...just a good 2 (or 4) speaker stereo setup.

  1. Cerwin Vega made some great speakers back in the 70s-80s. I wouldn't say they are audiophile quality but they have some of the tightest bass you can get from consumer speakers. But with a pair of Cerwins, you will defenitely be boomin'! I think the D-9s are some of the best speakers Cerwin Vega ever made. They have massive 15'' woofers and weigh 90lbs each! I have the Cerwin  Vega VE-12s now and they also are great speakers.

  2. infinity speakers

  3. 4 15's make the streets rock

  4. Old school Klipsch horn speakers are getting back in style.

    Otherwise i don't know

    Good luck

  5. Find a good used equipment store. Look for Infinity, Snell, Klipsch, Tannoy, B&W ... basically any of the old time brands. It's relatively easy to find pairs of speakers. Just check them out to be sure they are not blown .. but any reputable shop should allow returns for cause.

  6. If you are looking for real cheap but still good just go to Best Buy and check stuff out there. I recently found my mom and dad's old turntable and right now I just have a basic CD player/stereo, but we also had a good multi-disk CD player and receiver down there too. So I have all that for free, but I want to get some nice speakers--check out www.stereophile.com under their Equipment Reviews section--they have a budget buy section. Read the reviews on any of the Loud Speakers they have. Most of them are available on amazon.com and have additional user-reviews on there as well. It helps also because you can read an audiophile review as well as an every-man review on amazon.
