  4. You are probably talking about sewage sludge, which some farmers are using.  It is controversial, as many neighbors don't like the smell and there is a question about the toxic substances which are still there.

The use of industrial and sewage waste in farming has been around for centuries.  These products were some of the first 'fertilizers" applied to crops.  This use to be known as land farming, but that is a term from the 1970's.   I have heard the term bioremediation bounced around, but I call it biosolid utilization.  The use of manmade chemicals, even sewage sludge, would not allow these products to be used in an organic farming system.
