What species found in New York state bite?

small fly, looks similar to the common fly but bites and draws blood. Has not left visible welts on me so far that I know of.

We get swarms of small biting flies at my famly's cabin in souther ny, and I've only ever heard them called 'cluster flies'

you can contact someone to spray for them and they're not as bad the next year

The deer fly meets that description.  The dog fly does too, but I don't think it occurs that far north.
