    I could not find anything about this insect in any of my books so I was interested in your identification.  When I looked on Bug guide I found the same  picture posted there.  I am sure they would appreciate your answer there as well.

That's NOT a caterpillar.  It's a Waxbug.  This is a species of true bug that exudes a waxy substance that extends out from its body in columns that look like thick white hairs.  It is a very fragile insect and fascinating to watch.  One of the reasons this wax is created is to protect them from predators.  What attacking predator wants a mouthful of wax?

    Interesting little squirt isn't it?
