  1. Spend as much time as you can in an actual classroom. Don't wait for student teaching, field experience or approaches. If your schedule allows, go and find a school to volunteer at. Spend time in many grade levels and different schools, if you can. Observe, take pictures of bulletin boards, ask questions, make contacts, help, substitute teach and anything that will help you gain confidence as a teaching professional.

    Teaching is both extremely demanding and rewarding. You need to know what you are getting into BEFORE you have your own classroom.

    Best of luck,

    A first grade teacher

  2. make sure you also get into special ed!!

  3. Colleges usually want you to determine whether or not you want to be a elementary school teacher which requires a multiple subject teaching credential along with a recommended corresponding Bachelor or Arts such as liberal arts, child development or environmental studies.  The other type of credential program offered is one that focuses on teaching a single subjecft in secondary schools, and if you decide to continue in your education, you can qualify as a college professor.  There are different types of teaching credentials offered, such as special education teachers who teach mild to moderate or moderate to severely disabled children multiple subject curriculum.  You can get credentials that allow you to teach people from birth to 22 years old.

    There are many opportunities to work with children and their families with a bachelors in child development plus a teaching credential.  You can also work in social services as well.  A teaching credential can open up many avenues for you if you desire to work as a private teacher as well.  If you go to the website of whatever colleges you might like to attend, you will find a ton of information about possible career opportunities, the courses you would need to take, and how long it will take you to complete the degree and credential programs.  Usually, if you want to teach as an elementary or secondary classroom teacher, after receiving your bachelors degree, an average teaching credential program lasts from about 1 1/2 - 2 years.  It may be a bit longer to earn a credential for special education credentials. (There is a Level I and Level II crediantial you need to acquire before teaching special education)  The best way would be to talk to the advisor in the education department at whatever school you are interested in.   I wish you the best in your career choice.

  4. Don't do it! Change your major and choose another career quickly!!!!

  5. My fiance is also in college and wants to be a teacher and this is what I have found out to help him realize his dreams.  Get your teaching certification first.  This can usually be done in a month or so... depends on your state requirements.  Then, get into a middle school or what ever school you can simply for the teaching experience.  When the opportunity presents itself, go higher in grades to fully round your teaching capabilities and skills.  You need the experience because if two people apply for the job of you dreams and they've been teaching for ten years and you've never taught before... who gets the job?  Be sure to work on more than just your area of study.  Teachers are well rounded individuals in many ways.  Then when you can try and be at least an intern or a Teachers Aid in a college.  This gives you the college experience you may need to become an actual teacher.  And of course my fiance wants to teach in a University so he will need a Bachelor's... good thing is that your state usually pays for your education if you are already teaching. = )

    Hope this made sense and helps! = )

    {Kind of scatterbrained today! lol}

  6. Understand that there is more to teaching than what  they teach you in college.
