  1. .223, don't know the make or model.

  2. All any of the news sources are saying is "assault weapon"

This simply means that they have no earthly idea what kind of rifle was used so they just say what sound scary

  3. The media is simply saying:  Assault Rifle.  This is why I get tired of seeing questions that begin:  "What's the best assault rifle?  Where can I buy a sniper rifle?  How can I make a silencer?"

"Assault rifle" is a term coined by the media and the anti-gun community to lump a sporting rifle that has a certain 'look' into a black-list which will result in even more gun bans.  This is why I am of the mind that we should avoid using the collective terms 'assault rifle, sniper rifle, etc.' as much as possible.  There is no such thing as an "assault rifle."  There are combat rifle with semi & full auto capability but these are normally not available to the general public.  Why (for example) should the Ruger 10/22 be banned because some fool started calling it an 'assault rifle?'  Mimicking what the anti-gunners say just gives the anti-gunners more ammunition.

On a similar note, some guy got decapitated on a Greyhound bus in Canada around the same time-frame as the Marinette, Wi. shooting, which from what I've read was definitely NOT the work work of a sniper.  The shooter reportedly was only 7 feet away from one of his victims.  By definition a sniper picks and shoots his victims from afar.  By no stretch of the imagination can seven feet of distance be defined as "afar."  This was not the work of a sniper but pure and simply it was just:  Premeditated murder.  But I digress...  A witness on the Greyhound bus said that the killer used a "Rambo knife."  Why don't we just ban Rambo knives?  Better yet, why don't we just ban ALL KNIVES, including butter knives and plastic picnic knives that way we keep everybody safe!  Yeah, RIGHT!

So you see how ridiculous it all can get really fast.  Which is why responsible gun owners/hunters/sportsmen should take every opportunity to correct usage of the terms:  "Assault rifle; sniper rifle; silencer" among the newbies.
