What specific kinds of hormones do they use in cows?

If they are FDA approved and milk is residue tested for at the level of each farm's bulk tank...why the concern?

There are six different kinds of steroid hormones that are currently approved by FDA for use in food production in the US: estradiol, progesterone, testosterone, zeranol, trenbolone acetate, and melengestrol acetate. Estradiol and progesterone are natural female s*x hormones; testosterone is the natural male s*x hormone; zeranol, trenbolone acetate and melengesterol acetate are synthetic growth promoters (hormone-like chemicals that can make animals grow faster). Currently, federal regulations allow these hormones to be used on growing cattle and sheep, but not on poultry (chickens, turkeys, ducks) or hogs (pigs). The above hormones are not as useful in increasing weight gain of poultry or hogs.

Bovine Growth Horomone (bgh) stimulates unnaturally high levels of milk production.    If you look for a good brand of organic milk, they're usually certified BGH free.

Also be aware milk may contain antibiotics, drug residues, dewormers, and other drugs.  Supposedly there is a withdrawl period for most of these things and supposedly they test for anibiotic levels in the milk, but who really knows?

probably about the same amount as pesticides used in veg and fruits...theres far more genetic manipulation in plants than animals...id be more concerned about the plants
