I hope this does not come across as me being arrogant - I really don't mean it that way. But:

Lots of people have a fear of flying. I have flown pretty often ever since I was a baby (my dad worked for an airline when I was a kid, and I worked for one for a couple years in my 20s) so flying was never scary to me. So, my question is, what specifically scares you about flying? The takeoff? Landing? Cruise? Are you afraid that the plane will crash? Because of a mechanical malfunction? Pilot error? Are you afraid because flying is something foreign to you? Or do you know all about how airplanes work, etc. but are afraid regardless?

Again, I'm not trying to mock you for your fear or anything, I am just curious and would like to understand it better. Thank you in advance for your answer. And I hope I've not just given you more things to be afraid of :)

  3. I've been flying since I was a kid too.  I was never afraid until I was older.  I'm a mechanical engineer, so I have a bit of technical background, and am not particularly afraid of the mechanics of flying.  Here's what did it for me:  Several years ago, I was on a job assignment in a small town for a year, there wasn't much to do in off hours, so I decided it would be 'fun' to take flying lessons on the weekends.

They started the class by showing an FAA movie on airplane crashes, and gave multitudes of statistics that showed >90% of all crashes are pilot error, and most often during takeoff and landing.  Speaking with my cousin who is in flight school now, they apparently don't show the scary movie anymore to new pilots, which is probably a good thing.

Anyhoo, take-offs and landings scare the wits out of me, especially during stromy/icy weather.  I just pray I've got a good pilot  :-)

  4. getting lost in the airport. seriously. i'm 17 and have never done it alone, and i am going to have to do it this summer. and my airport is gigantic. so confusing.

oh, and i'm a little anxious about who i'm going to get stuck sitting next to. there are some weird people out there, and i'd rather not be uncomfortable my whole flight.

i fly with my family all the time, it doesn't bother me at all. but alone, that's a whooole different story.

  5. the thought of the engines exploding in midflight and the plane falls out of the sky and we all die...

  6. take off and landing - as they are the most dangerous, dont you watch Air Crash Investergation!!
