I have some crab apple sauce which is pretty stout. I like to make pie by substituting apple sauce for pumpkin pie filling and making a pie like a pumpkin pie. I use the spices for the pumpkin pie recipe and it is really good but are there some other spices I could use instead?

  1. cinnamon SUGAR, nutmeg?

  2. Your apple sauce pie inspires an idea - how about a pork chop apple pie?

As someone mentioned, for good apple flavor, I would use real apples. My favorite for baking is granny smith, as they are really tart (sweeten when cooked) and hold up their shape well.

  3. You can't make a pumpkin pie with no pumpkin.  Applesauce alone would make a nasty pie in my opinion.  Why not use fresh apples?

  4. I think your pumpkin-crab apple pie sounds great!  I also enjoy a pumpkin or butternut squash pie made w/ apple butter, so I would think your crabapple sauce would be an excellent addition.

  5. How about some herbs instead I was thinking Nightshade and Hemlock.......but not to much. : )

  6. Cinnamon  and nutmeg.
