What sport is handball closest to?

Because I'm having a hard time understanding the concepts of the game.

squash I think.

It starts out  with a person who throws a ball at the wall.

and if a person catches the ball the initial thrower must tag the wall before the catchee throws the ball and hits the wall.

if the ball hits the wall first the the runner is out.

else the person stays in the game.

from what I can gather, there are different games called handball.

The European version is similar to soccer and the American version is similar to racquetball.

Squash and handball are played on the same court - handball with a gloved hand and squash with a small racket.  The object of both games is essentially the same:  To force your opponent to fail to directly hit the "frontboard" before the ball bounces twice or more.
