What started the custom of right handed persons having to switch hands when using a knife to cut food?

  1. Yeah right! I'm right-handed and yet, I have been using my left hand without problems ever since I broke my right arm a number of years back. I also discovered then that I can brush my teeth and shave with my left hand without thinking twice about it. I guess it's been a cultural habit on my side, is all.


  2. I think that American's eat with their right hand ( if they are right handed) because they wanted to rebel against the Britians. Why do you think we drink coffee?

  3. My guess is that it is a matter of simple mechanics.  If you are right-handed, it makes sense that the hand doing the work is the right hand.  It would be less efficient for the non-dominant hand to do the work when the dominant hand is merely holding the meat (or other food) still.
