  1. The source of the Mississippi River is Lake Itasca (which is 1,475 ft above sea level) in Itasca State Park located in Clearwater County, Minnesota.  It ends in southeast Louisiana. However, through a natural process known as delta switching the end of the Mississippi River has shifted its final course to the mouth of the Gulf of Mexico every thousand years or so.  This process has, over the past 5,000 years, caused the coastline of south Louisiana to advance toward the Gulf from 15 to 50 mi. The currently active delta lobe is called the Birdfoot Delta or the Balize Delta.

  2. The Mississippi River begins in Minnesota.  It ends in Louisiana when it flows into the Gulf of Mexico
