Q:Why do thse states have a lot of tornadoes you say?

A:The land in the central United States is the best breeding ground for the storms which produce tornadoes. The land in the Great Plains is relatively flat, which allows cold dry polar air from Canada to meet warm moist tropical air from the Gulf of Mexico. It's along the front between the two airmasses that most tornadoes form.

Most tornadoes in the United States form in an area called "Tornado Alley". This area includes parts of Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Nebraska. Storm chasers travel to this area because of the high concentration of tornadoes. These tornadoes are formed by thunderstorms. Some of the tornadoes in the southern states such as Florida, South Carolina, and Georgia are caused by hurricanes.

30-year average number of tornadoes per year in Alaska is closer to zero than to one. In Oklahoma though the average jumps to 52. Although no state is immune for tornadoes, there is an area that suffers from more tornadoes than any other. This area is called Tornado Alley. It is stretched out from West-Texas to North-Dakota. That is 1600 kilometres from north to south and 950 kilometres from east to west. Because it is not an official area the areas that are counted for can vary. What is certain is that large pieces of Texas, Kansas and Nebraska are a part of it. These areas suffer from more tornadoes than any other state in the United States.

Texas is struck most of all in the last 50 years. From 1950 until now they suffered from almost 5500 tornadoes. That's is an average of 110 each year.

  10. It's been said that Texas has the most, but probably due to the expanse of land area.  It seems more recently they have been hitting Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, Arkansas, Tennesee and Georgia.  These are the same storm systems that come our way (east Texas) and we always get tornado warnings, but then they just get worse the farther east the storm systems travels.  We have actually had 2 tornadoes in my town in the past 2 months, but thankfully they weren't that bad.

  11. Texas

It has an average of 120 a year!

  12. Texas

Texas records the most, with an average total of about 110 tornadoes a year. Florida has the most tornadoes per area(or per square mile), but they are typically weaker.
