What states are considered south, west, Midwest and east?

we argue about if ohio is in the midwest. my friend said WV is part of the south and so on.

What state are you from and what do you consider it to be

I'm from Illinois - Its in the Midwest

EDIT - I believe the Midwest States are considered to be

North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and OHIO

That is something I have asked for years.  I think it depends on who is making the reference and where they are from.  Don't leave out the term of Mississippi Valley and Ohio Valley.  Also, the Plains States.  Now where is Colorado and Utah?  Are they the west, or Rocky Mountain states or Northwest, maybe part of the Southwest desert.?  Gets confusing.  As far as WV, where did they stand during the Civil War days?  Were they North or South?  Normally that is the reference used for the states that existed during htat time.
