  1. oil is where you find it, but there are not any oil wells that are significant producers in NY state-some nat. gas, hope this helps...good luck

  2. NYS? How do you think Wellsville got its name?

The best areas are in the West, though. If the price of crude keeps going up, watch for the oil shales and sands being tapped. It's neither clean nor efficient but we have more petroleum locked up there than they have in the Middle East.

  3. There were a lot of natural gas wells caped in central NY when I lived there . As for oil ?

  4. As others mentioned, no major oil finds in New York.  Natural Gas is another story.  In the past, there were minor finds.  Now with new technology, the Marcellus Shale formation can be a major find.  For a map of the formation, including its extent in NYS, go to:  http://geology.com/articles/marcellus-sh...

For oil in the US, the Bakken Shale area in northeastern Montana and northwestern North Dakota is being worked on by Brigham Exploration, EOG Resources, MDU Resources, Northern Oil & Gas company, Whiting Petroleum and others

The Devonian Black Shale formation is in Eastern Tenn.

The Permian Basin is a major oil area in eastern New Mexico and western Texas (Occidental Petroleum is there).  There are also oil wells all over south Texas and northeastern Texas.  Years ago when I visited Kilgore, most of the town smelled like a roof being tarred.

The Pinedale Anticline area is in Woming and is being developed by Ultra Petroleum.

There is (or was when I was there years ago) a working oil well on the grounds of the Oklahoma state capitol building.

I also saw oil wells in California.

Southeastern Kansas also has some wells.

Every once in awhile, I received slow mail spam hyping some penny stock that wants to drill in Kentucky.
