I am about to start my senior year towards a psychology major. I want to keep my major, but how hard would it be for me to become a Special Ed. teacher? Would I just need to get my teaching cert. or what? Is there more to it since I want to do special education?

  1. NCLB mandates that you must be highly qualified. To teach special ed in elementary school you need to be certified in special ed and elementary ed. With a psychology degree and a special ed degree, you could work in high school. My current mentee is doing that in NC.

  2. It probably depends on your state.  You do need a teaching certificate.  In California there is a special teaching certificate for Special Ed. teachers, and it takes longer to get (1.5 years vs. 1 year).

  3. First of all, good for you!  I have been doing Spec. Ed. for a while, and it is very rewarding (most days!)  There are a ton of different things that you can do, with kids ranging from students in an al general ed. setting to students with mental retardation.

Most states are desperate!  They need spec. ed. teachers, so they are willing to help you out.  Texas, where I currently am, will even allow you to work on your certificate while you teach.  Sure makes it easier to afford.  I would graduate with your psych. degree and then do an alternative program to get your license.

    Good luck!
