I'm a college student and I'm interested in magazine photography. Are there ways that I can get my foot in that field? Can I connect magazine photographers to ask them about their jobs? Any advise would be helpful. Thanks!

  1. I am in a similar position and I have been building a portfolio. I have been working for a number of websites for free, doing portraits of musicians and small scale photoshoots. I have been published in a few magazines too, but just small things but I have been asked by a magazine with over a million readers worldwide to start shooting for them!! I am also assisting a stylist and photographer who is making their name in the world of fashion magazines. At the same time I have my own photography blog and flickr where I have recieved attention and gotten some small shoots offered.

All of this is helping me make contacts, build up my portfolio and get loads of experience on my CV.

It's so hard, but you have to get out there and never be afraid to contact someone who you admire, they may even offer you some work experience.

I take photos everyday all day, I take 2 cameras everywhere I go and I spend a fortune on film and developing but if you're not dedicated you'll never get anywhere!

    Good luck!

  2. Since you are in college, I will assume that you have been taking classes in photography.

You can also gain a lot of experience by working for the schools newspaper as a staff photographer and start collecting tearsheets.

Next attend the local NPPA and ASMP meetings and network with the pros in your area.
