  1. 1. A good or killer voice

    2. Excellent timing since Hip Hop and Rap are all about having tight "flow" and rhyme skills. So get a Metronome to sharpen your timing skills when composing your music.

    3. Learn how to compose your music and song lyrics.

    4. Be able to perform well in front of lots of people under pressure

    5. Have a good groove beats and try to be original. You DO NOT want to copy your fav Artists at all. There a million copycats on the music world....& you will be another copycat in the Hip hop game too if you copy your fav Artists. Your goal as a Solo Artist is stand on your own 2 feet and be different and unique from the rest of the pack.

You like Lupe and Common..right? So, don't be like them. They are who they are and you are who you are. You need to find "YOUR OWN Hip Hop style" through experimentation and your songs.  Look at Lumidee, Aliayah (RIP), Da Brat, Whitney Houston, Busta Rymes, LL Cool J,  Mariah Carey, Salt and Pepa...they are Artists who all have their own unqiue styles.

    6. Find your voice and your own signature "trademark" that people will be able to identify you with.

    7. Perform at as many local Talent Shows as your can to get your  training performing experience. This can be a very painful prcess but it will strengthen you as a Artist. I perofmed at 7 Drum contest from 1999 on through 2007. I was in the Sam Ash finals in 2000. That WAS my highlight from all those drum contests because I lost all the rest. My numerous defeats taught me to survive and persevere because I quickly learned my mistakes and what I did wrong to lose.  Because being in the music game is like being in a war against other Artists. So, you have to learn to stand on your own 2 feet real fast...

    8. Copyright all your songs to protect yourself against other rip off Artist and people who would try and steal your songs. This is for your artisitic protection and for your making a living as a Solo Artist too.

    9. Be prepared to make many sacrifices for your music career. You are going to date less and wont have time to hang with your old friends and see your family that often either. This is the cae with al othger Artists. A Solo Music career is a big time commitment and there is no room for slackers or dreamers.

    10. Save up a lot of money for buying good gear, paying for studio time, recording, editing & mixing demos, CDs, promotion, flyers & printing up your own T-shirts down the road. A Solo Artist career is very...very epensive without out a Record Label...trust me on this! I've been strugging with these facts and truths since 2004.

    11. Get to know as many Rehearsal and Recording Studio owners real fast. You will need their services in your music career. This is a Win, win situation if you do this. They also can hook you up with other Musicians, Artists and other cool opportinitues that might come your way as well. I'm very, very fortunate that I know a both a Rehearsal and Recording Studio owner real well....but he is also a very good personal friend of mine who I've known for 5 years. We became friends by accident and I pass out his Studio flyers for him on occasion as a favor to him because he has greatly helped me out in my Solo Artist career.  He came from a big time Record Label as a former A & R Rep in Hollywood and now he owns his very own Studio since 2003.

    12.  Buy good music gear that is reliable and wont break down. If you buy crappy gear...it will end up holding you back in many ways. Do your research on music gear, get to know the good music brands and ask poeple about what they like and what they don't like in music gear. Also, read the reviews on music gear too. This helps a lot too in your search for good gear.  And anothet thing,  it's a matter of personal preference too. Just like cars too...not everyone likes Ford Mustang GT, you know?  Some people are picky in what they like and that's fine and all. Whats the most important aspect of it all is that you just get your music made.

Hope this helps and good luck
