What steps does someone have to take to make their illegal alien spouse legal?

To change an alien already in the country into a permanent resident, you have to file for adjustment of status.  If the person is here illegally, there is no status to adjust.  Even if they came in legally and overstayed there is hope, if it they simply hopped the border then it's a no-can-do.  They'll have to go home and then get properly admitted as the spouse of a citizen.

This can be a very long enduring process. Marriage doesnt solve the entire issue. You need somone that is willing to sign as this persons guardian if anything were to happen to the legal provider. My aunt is from the phillipines. The process for her to become an american citizen was long and enduring.
