What steps should I take to repaint peeling garage door?

I plan to repaint a garage door that has some peeling paint. My plan is to scrape off whatever paint comes off easily, sand the areas that are peeling, apply a primer, and then paint the same color again with a latex outdoor paint. Should I do anything different? Is the priming necessary? I need to replace my sander .... will just a palm sander do the trick here?

  1. I do not know about wood or masonite doors but if it is a steel door wash it with TSP(Tri Sodium Phosphate) to etch the surface before you paint. If you know the manufacturer contact them . Most are very helpful.

  2. You should use a wire brush for the whole of the door ... the peeling paint will come off anyway and the brush with help 'key' your new paint ... once brushed over you then need to hose/hand wash the door to get any and all dirt and dust off ... you now have a clean surface .....

priming can be done if you want to - but seeing as you're painting the same colour, apart from the areas that have no colour paint because they peeled, you may find the old scrubbed surface will act as a primer for the new coat(s) ... if you sand then you will probably have to sand the whole door back to the base metal/wood..... try looking for paints that have a primer built into them .... they save a lot of hassle and give a really good finish......
