  1. If your local, or nearby fire department offers an explorers (Junior firefighter) program, you can join that. They'll let you train with and learn most of what you will need to know when you graduate and begin your formal training for a job.

I don't think you can take any of the classes you will need before you graduate, so you'll need to wait for a few years before you can start on those.

However, now you can begin working out and conditioning yourself, as well as reading up on firefighting. Doing this will let you have a big head start when you finally get into the training and get a job.

For a work out, I would suggest endurance, in everything. Strength is important, as well, but stamina is what will either make you or break you.

Along with a typical weight lifting regimen, I suggest taking a curling bar and placing 40 pounds on one end. Then, lift it so that it is vertical, with the weight on the end, and push it up as far as you can, and bring it down controlled. That will get you used to working over your head, which you'll be doing a lot as a firefighter.

    Good luck.
