  1. The classical tradition of sociology is largely European, and was defined principally by major thinkers who were of British, French & German origin. Sociology was introduced in the 1830s, by for example: August Comte; Alexis de Tocqueville; Karl Marx; Herbert Spencer; Max Weber and Emile Durkheim. Thus, sociology became an independent discipline among the social and historical sciences.

This was developed to address and understand the events that shaped the late 19th and early 20th centuries and occurred concomitantly with the rise of the dichotomies of poverty and philanthropy (e.g. Cadbury; Rowntree; Salt; etc.)
