  1. Dividends are generally cash.  Statistics are on cash dividends because a so-called stock dividend is really a less than 1:1 split.

  2. Mutual funds are a collection of companies shares under one name. They are run by fund managers and their goal is to make money.

There most stocks that pay dividends pay in cash. Some ranging from 1 cent to $10 per share a year. So every quarter a company pays a dividend to the shareholders. So for example, AT&T pays $1.60 a year in dividends or 40 cents per quarter. IF you owned 100 shares, you will get $40 per quarter or $160 a year in dividends.

I take all my dividends and move them to a retirement account. It's one way of funding my retirement. Sometimes, I also use it to by stocks as well.

The more shares you have the more dividends you will have. Check out T, MO, PM, CTL, KEY and see how much they pay in divdends. There are more out there, you just have to look for them.

Keep in mind, just because they pay dividends, the stock price can still go up and down. Investing purely on just for the dividends sometimes isn't the best idea. Like financial stocks. They used to pay great dividends but now they cut or suspended their dividends and the stock price has gone down a lot.
