Small stores in and around the central train station (Hauptbahnhof) are open, but all the larger stores are closed.  Some flea markets may be open on a seasonal basis in some residential neighborhoods.

Also, on some weekends, the stores are actually open on Sunday- such as this past Sunday in Frankfurt the stores were open from 13:00- 18:00.  It isn't often, but does happen every now and then. :-)  

Otherwise- yes you can shop at gas stations, train stations, airports, restaurants, but that is about the sum of it.

Don't remember downtown Frankfurt that good, but if you find a gas station, they often have small to medium grocery sections, which are very handy on Sundays or late at night.

Stores in the near of the station and airport. Sometimes also Tourist stores.

I have lived there for quite sometimes...and i can tell you there's no stores open on Sunday's ecept the train stations, the airports and the tourist stores.
