  1. Home Depot has a new type of paint that is eco friendly and many other eco friendly things for your house!

  2. Look for low or non VOC paint. All the stores you mentioned will carry them. It means that there will be little to no odor, which is the biggest offender. The odor in paint is chemicals drying and 'outgassing', which gets into the air. Low or non VOC does not outgas.

  3. Many home improvement stores have low voc paint, Sherwin Williams has a good quality low and now voc paint. You can also buy milk based paint online at various locations. The best way to tell if it has Volitile Organic Compounds is the smell or if it warns to only use in well ventilated areas.

  4. Your are basically searching for indoor paint that does not have VOC's which essentially give us gasses. Home Deport now has an eco friendly line of indoor paint that does not have VOC's and so does Lowes. You can also find such paints at speciality paint stores but will probably end up paying more.

Interesting that some of the old historical paints are still available using buttermilk and other natural ingredients.

  6. Benjamin Moore makes a zero VOC paint called Eco-Spec.  ICI makes a zero VOC paint,  too.  VOCs are what cause paint fumes that can cause headaches and other health issues while the paint is curing.  You won't be able to get a zero VOC paint in black or dark colors.  Its only available in white and light colors.  I have used Eco-Spec to paint hospital rooms and nursing homes where fumes from most paints cold cause real problems.  The only negative about this paint is if the temperature is above 70F it dries very fast,  so fast that you need to be quick to fix brush or roller marks.  I am not a fan of Ace paints or any paint from Home Depot.  I can't say anything about Lowes paints because I haven't used them.  Regular latex interior paint has very little fumes.  After a week it is fully cured and there is no off-gassing.
