  1. Skype does the same thing. The whole idea is to make phone calls from your computer.

    Keep this option in mind.

Yahoo Messenger with Voice. Make PC to PC calls anywhere in the World.

Thats all the magic jack is. Heres the thing. With magic jack.... does not use dial up!. Broad band okay, cable okay. Dial up?...no way.

What do I need to get started (requirements)?

Any computer with Windows XP or Vista operating system; (Mac/Apple will be available any day.)

One of the following: broadband, high-speed internet, cable internet, DSL, WiFi or WiMax

  2. no!!! catch....to it! circuit city was suppose to get it, but then nothing!....I got it online last may/07.....I took it on vacation with my laptop all over Europe..! I love it!  I didn't have to spend any money to call my family and friends with my US area-code...it work from everywhere!

no...MagicJack is not like skype....its in a class all by its self.....! its kinda riding on ymax company in Fl..

with the MJ you can just plug in any old analog phone directly into the port......!

I also use skype .... it cost much more money then MJ....

    I use Packet8 VoIP provider

    skype....voice.yahoo.com  SIP service

    MagicJack  ymax

and I just finished ooVoo because its not free anymore to call landlines and cellphones!

  3. Being from PA, I know of no stores in Oregon...

J&R sells it.  They do have a store in NYC. http://www.jr.com/templates/information/...

Sam's Carribbean Marketplace is also a store that sells Magic Jack. They are in Hempstead, NY: http://www.sams247.com/storehours.aspx

It does however, appear as you say, that no large retail chain is selling the product.

I think the biggest reason it isn't being sold in stores is that they have enough of a problem now keeping up with demand selling over 30,000 units a day or a million units a month.

And even if they were able to produce them fast enough to meet the demand of huge in store sales, can you imagine how many more upset customers they would have with their lack of customer service? Such as the one found here - http://www.ripoffreport.com/reports/0/32...

I think they are smart in trying to control their growth for now, at least until they have more of the problems ironed out and more local numbers to select from and are better able to provide some kind of customer service.

With all that said, I still think Magic Jack is a great thing to have. We've had ours for a week now and yes there have been a couple of problems. Still to make free outgoing calls, it's worth it.  I wouldn't want to depend on it as an only line however. We use ours only for calling long distance.
