What strings should i be using for my acoustic?

I just inherited my brother's old acoustic guitar and when I play it doesn't sound right. The 2 thickest strings are steel strings and rest are nylon, not sure what gauge. Playing the steel strings seems to make a really deep sound, then when I play the nylon they make a huge contrast, there's no progression from deep, less deep, etc. when I change to the nylon ones. Does using different type of strings affect the sound that each string makes?
