  1. uhh cell walls?

  2. xylem and phloem are only found in dicots. roots separate algea and other plants.

  3. Algae have no true tissues, which is why they are protists, not plants.  Because they have no true tissues, they cannot have vascular tissue that is responsible for transporting water and dissolved sugars and minerals.  Living submerged in water means they can absorb these directly through their cells, but on land, this is not possible.

  4. vascular tissue (xylem and phloem). Because they are no longer in the water, they need tubes to transport water and nutrients throughout the structure of the plant.

Algae live in water so they don't need vascular tissue (and all plants have cell walls).

Charophyceans evolved into Bryophytes --> pteridophytes --> angiosperms etc.
