  1. You can probably answer the first one on your own, but I'll say, anything that distracts them from task or subject, being tired, hungry, thirsty, sick, or preoccupied with problems of any sort, being too hot or cold.

These are things that keep them distracted.

Behaviors, well, distracting or annoying behaviors of others, and tics or repetitive or obsessive behaviors of their own, bad habits.

The best way, behaviorally to get rid of those is to extinguish them using applied behavior analysis, or to find and teach a powerful replacement behavior.

  2. I am a sessional teacher, who teaches first aid, as well as a Youth & Disability support worker.

My pet hate is as mel said students who text in class, its rude and disruptive. I always tell students that all phones are to be turned off, while in class. If they continue to use their phone, I will make them turn the phone off and place it on the front of my desk.

Another is students talking when the teacher or another student is talking, I will usually stop talking cross my arms and look at the person, and say "are you finished", or "would you like to share with everyone what is so important that you have to be rude enough to talk while I or so and so is talking", this usually works very well.

On the first day of class I lay down a few rules

    Please turn phones off

Do not talk while others are talking

Place any rubbish in the bin

Keep the room clean and tidy

When dealing with students who have ADHD etc, who disrupt the class, I direct and divert them. If this does not work, I will pull them from the class and give them the choice, that if they want their certificate in what ever course they are currently studying they have to pass my class, so go home if you don't want to pass, or stop being a idiot. I will also speak to their teacher, who organized for me to do the first aid class. I have found that pre-apprentices & apprentices training for a trade e.g plumbers, electrician etc, are usually the loudest and most disruptive.

However the teacher has to have good knowledge of the subject they are teaching, be able to direct and divert students when and were needed, most importantly ensure the class is fun and interactive. The teacher has to also be confident enough to take control of the class, and if they have to raise their voice to bring the class into line then do so.

Detention is another good way of controlling disruptive students, but student should not be allowed to use detention as way of getting out of work, they must be made to do work while in detention, not allowed to talk or muck around. The teacher who is charge of detention should be of strong character/willed who will enforce that work is being done, and sign off students who have done the work set out. Those who don't do the work should be made to do lunch time detention, and their parents/guardian notified of their child's behaviour and non compliance.

  3. I think that the number one reason students don't learn, is because the subject doesn't interest them at all. If you make learning fun and interesting, then the students would love to pay attention to you. My spanish teacher loves to tell stories out of nowhere about his life and experiences. He gets off track from the subject sometimes and thats how he keeps my attention and " get the students involved" go and make "everybody" participate, so the students know that this is not a free time class.

  4. We have so many kids in my classes that don't behave. The cause of it is usually just for attention. Such as texting, screaming out loud, Raping in class, banging on the deks, trying to talk to there friends who are in the hall, giving the teacher attitude, and many more.

Instead of stopping the class the whole year for students mis behaving just start giving out detentions and referals. If you are scared of the student who is missbehaving call the office to come and get them. I wish the teachers in my school did that!

    Hope things workout :)

  5. I worked in a primary school with children who had behavior problems and one of the main reasons teaching stopped was when the child with behavior issues decides that they are not getting enough attention and start kicking off in class.  The child I dealt with also became aggressive and we would have to clear the would class as hey were prone for picking up coheirs and throwing them.  The children in the class were very tolerant of this child and learned to ignore the child and nine times out of ten the child stopped calling out and being a general pain as nobody was interested but on the odd occasion they would really kick off especially if something had happened at home.

  6. texting!! it is so annoying when people do it in class.
