Well for starters why not let them have a look through their bedrooms and see if they have any old toys, games or books that they don't have anymore and why not have a garage sale, or why not get together as a family and all do it so they have a little stall for themselves and you can keep an eye on things as well.

What about maybe doing things around the home for you, like help with the garden or washing the car.

What about other friends and family members, maybe wash some for their cars or help out doing little jobs that will make them feel they are doing something to get some money not just been given it.

I think they should earn a little money even if you call it an allowance.  Chores are done to make extra money whether at the home you live in or at a neighbors.  It helps to gain responsibility, accountability and time management, with the end result being that earn a fee.

I believe that if a child (no matter what the age) wants something bad enough that is not part of what is necessary to raise them (housing, food and clothing) then the discussion comes up as to how bad do they want it and perhaps they should earn part of the money to show how much they really want it.  In this day and age the parents tend to just give a child anything they whine for and what everyone else has.  All to often they end up breaking it and you are out the money.  

If they are taught to earn part of the cost of an item then they will respect it more.  Take care of it and enjoy it more.  They will also learn that they can do the same thing and plan for something if they learn the responsibility of money management.  All these are skills they need to know and master.

those are good ideas, you could try fundraising, it depends what you need money for, and how much of it.  I need to get $7000 by may, its challenging, i go around to businesses asking for corporate sponsors, you could also ask family.

about the yard raking, it depends who you do it for, I once raked sumones yard in the freezing cold for like 9 hours and only got $35 out of it.

Honestly when I read the question, I thought to myself why would a 10 year old need to go out and make money?  I think at 10 the only thing should be an allowance, which could be given for everyday at home chores. Like taking out the trash etc.  But I wouldnt let my 10 year old go door to door to rake lawns or walk peoples dogs. Way to many weird people out there.
